Blood donations urged after blizzard

DENVER – Vitalant is asking anyone who is eligible to give blood in the coming days, to help replenish 883 units that could not be donated due to this week’s blizzard.

Weather conditions canceled or shortened operations at donation centers in Colorado, Wyoming, and in Rapid City, SD, and affected 16 blood drives. Conditions on Thursday canceled another nine blood drives, and closed donation centers in Rapid City and in Cheyenne, WY.

Vitalant says that adds up to an estimate of more than 800 missed donations, with more than 3,000 needed each week in our region.

“Our mobile blood drive resources are booked out weeks in advance so rescheduling canceled blood drives at high schools and businesses takes time,” Vitalant Senior Director of Donor Recruitment Charlie Propernick said. “In the meantime, we’re asking donors as they are able to find their closest Vitalant donation center or another upcoming blood drive to help build up the supply to pre-blizzard levels.”

Vitalant has eight donation centers open up to seven days a week, and mobile blood drives daily across the state. The organization urges communities not affected by severe weather to help support patients here and in other parts of the country.
